- The Aboriginal name was Pulamoka seboo, 'salmon river.' Acadians settled in this area in the 1780s and freed slaves brought with the Loyalists in 1783-85 who also settled along the river in Yarmouth County.
- The name of their settlement changed from Salmon River Settlement to Riverdale in 1874.
