  • Samuel de Champlain called the place Port Fourchu, ‘Forked Harbour, and that name still exists, applied to Cape Fourchu on the W side of the harbour. The name Yarmouth was in use as early as 1759, transferred from Yarmouth, MA.
  • In 1761 Sealed Landers and two other families came here from New England to settle. For years Yarmouth was the major shipbuilding centre of Nova Scotia and by the 1870s possessed more tonnage per capita than any other seaport in the world.

  • Michael Wayne McGray

Serial killer had "searing hunger to kill" He has been convicted of killing seven people but promises police he will identify 16 more victims if he is given immunity for himself and accomplices and psychiatric treatment for his "demons."

Michael McGray (1964-) was born in Collingwood, ON, but raised in Yarmouth, second youngest of six children born to a welder.

His first murder victim was 17-year-old Elizabeth Gale Tucker in Digby County in 1985 and the latest was his cell mate in a B.C. prison in 2010.

In between there were five others between Halifax and Seattle, not counting the 16 others he claims to have killed during those 15 years.

McGray claims he was beaten by his alcoholic father and was sexually abused in the reform schools where he essentially grew up.

He said he preferred to kill when he was not drinking or on drugs "so I can enjoy it."

  • Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

  • The breed was developed in the Acadian community of Little River Harbour in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, around the beginning of the 19th century.

The toller was originally referred to as the Little River Duck Dog before being officially recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club in 1945 as a purebred dog.

The toller is a mixture of retrievers, spaniels, setters, and possibly a farm collie mongrel, although this has yet to be confirmed.

The breed was perfected in the second half of the 19th century.
