Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Yarmouth and Acadian Shores
Description From Owner:
- The Aboriginal people called the area Kespoogwit, “land's end,' and the place Maligeak, 'crooked every which way, referring to the Yarmouth River.
- Samuel de Champlain called the place Port Fourchu, ‘Forked Harbour, and that name still exists, applied to Cape Fourchu on the W side of the harbour. The name Yarmouth was in use as early as 1759, transferred from Yarmouth, MA.
- In 1761 Sealed Landers and two other families came here from New England to settle. For years Yarmouth was the major shipbuilding centre of Nova Scotia and by the 1870s possessed more tonnage per capita than any other seaport in the world.
