Description From Owner:
  • The name derives from a cottage built by Charles P. Allen which he called Waverley after one of the novels by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832).
  • Allen built his cottage on land he bought in 1847 but there were settlers here before 1836. Alexander Taylor discovered gold in 1861 and news of it brought a wave of new settlers.
  • The Waverley Gold Mining Co. was incorporated in 1865. By 1903 gold mining had ceased in this area.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015

  • Waverley Heritage Museum

The museum is located in the former St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, itself a building worthy of being a museum.

The church was built with naval construction techniques so inside it looks like an upside down ship's hull, just like the famous Farmers' Market in Saint John, NB.

In 1861 there was a gold rush in Waverley and between then and 1940, 7,300 ounces of gold were mined.

The museum at 2463 Rocky Lake Drive has a stamp mill replica, blacksmith tool display, archives, photos and information about the community's gold-mining past.
    Admission by donation.
