- The town took its name from the river, first named Esiktaweak, 'whimpering or whining as it goes along,' and the name for both gradually became corrupted to its present form.
- The town site was originally part of two lots granted to Francis and Henry Ellis in 1765. In 1921 ten buildings were destroyed by fire and two years later a main street fire left six families homeless.
- In 1939 fire destroyed the blacksmith shop, town hall and a store. The Dickie Lumber Company, built in 1879, burned down three times between 1896 and 1899.
