Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Yarmouth and Acadian Shores
- Among the first settlers were six Acadian families named Saulnier. Their surname may be traced to 15th- and 16th-century workers on the salterns, or salt works of Saintonge in SW France.
- Over time these workers became known as 'saulniers.' Their expertise arrived with them and they, among others, were responsible for dyking the salt marshes of Acadia.
