Saline springs bubbling up from the foot of Mount Thom inspired the name. In 1813 and 1823, attempts were made to recover some of this salt.
The lower part of Eight Mile Brook was settled around 1785 by William McKay and Archibald Gray, members of a Highland regiment. The place became known as Salt Springs Lot.
