- The Mi'kmaw names for this place were Mooloktooch and Noolektooch, ‘place jammed with ice' and 'bivouacking place.
- On French maps from 1700 the place is shown as Baye de Ordienne, and later, Morienne. Later it was called Morien Bay and then Cow Bay until 1895, when Port Morien became the name by provincial statute.
- This was the site of the first regular coal mining operations in North America, when the French opened a mine in 1720 to supply Louisbourg.
