  • Later this place was called Green Cove and then named in honour of Sir Peregrine Maitland (1777-1854), governor of the province from 1823-31.

    Bankrupting The Undertaker "A hop in every drop" was the slogan used for 50 years by travelling medicine man Dr. Herbert L. Rose of Port Maitland.

    Dr. Rose brewed his own secret medicine and travelled throughout the Maritimes by horse and wagon, hawking the concoction.

    According to Hattie Perry in her book Old Days, Old Ways, Dr. Rose claimed that his special formula would bankrupt the local undertaker due to a lack of business.
