- The place name is of Basque origin, from the word “degrat,' a stage where fish were landed and the platforms on which they were dried.
- The place was in use as early as 1720, and settlers came in 1752. In 1881 this was a flourishing fishing community with a population of 1,922. Nearby are Petit-de-Grat Shoal, Basque Island and Basque Shoal.
