Description From Owner:
  • The name traces from Mooskudo-boogwek, 'suddenly widening out after a narrow entrance at its mouth,' and the current name is an anglicized version of the original name.
  • Lands in the area of the harbour, known by the French as Mouscou-dabouet, were conveyed to Mathieu des Goutins in 1691. English settlement began in the 1750s. Lower Musquodoboit, settled in 1799, was first called Meagher's Grant.
  • Upper Musquodoboit, settled in 1798 by Deacon Samuel Fisher Archibald, was first known as Deacontown.
  • Petpeswick Harbour: First called Koolpijwik, 'the river eddies in rapids,' which became anglicized as Port Piswick and then evolved to Petpeswick.
  • The land in the area was part of an 8,000-acre grant made in 1771 to George Bayer and seven others. By 1827, 17 families were living here.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015
