Description From Owner:
  • The place was named to honour Richard John Uniacke (1753-1830), whose long political career began with his election in 1783 to the Nova Scotia Assembly.
  • In 1793 he was named attorney general, a title he held until his death. In 1819 Uniacke was granted lands that included the present Mount Uniacke and Mount Uniacke Gold Mines, by which time he had bought up most of the surrounding lands.
  • Between 1813-15 he built a country mansion here that is now part of the Nova Scotia Museum complex. His name also lives on at Mount Uniacke Gold Mines, Lake, River, (all in Hants County), Uniacke Point in Cape Breton County and Uniacke Hill in NB.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015

(Exit 3 or 4, Hwy. 101) at Mount Uniacke showcases the fully furnished grand country mansion of Richard John Uniacke (1753-1830), built between 1813-16 and modelled after an Irish country estate.

Uniacke served as Attorney General of Nova Scotia 1793-1830. The estate included barns, a coach house, guest house, wash house, baths, privy, hot house, caretaker's house and an ice house.

Part of the vista to be enjoyed from the portico of the grand house was sheep grazing in the distance. To keep them from wandering onto the lawns, Uniacke built what is known as a haha wall, a natural-looking barrier.

It is one of only two known to remain in Canada. There is a gift shop.
