- Almost equidistant from Annapolis and Kentville and nicknamed the 'Heart of the valley.' Settlers were here by 1773 and early names for the place were Wilmot Corner and Fowlers Corner.
- In 1854 a public vote changed the name to Middleton, reflecting its position in the middle of Wilmot Township and between Annapolis and Kentville.
