This place and the nearby communities of Middle Sackville and Upper Sackville are locally called 'The Sackvilles' and are chiefly bedroom communities for folks who work in Halifax-Dartmouth.
The name derives from Fort Sackville (now Bedford) which from 1749 to 1856 guarded the Windsor Road from Halifax to the Annapolis Valley.
The fort was named for George Sackville Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville (1716-85) who was secretary of state for the colonies in the British cabinet from 1755-82. In 1996 this area became part of the Halifax Reg. Mun.
