  • On the W side of the Grand Narrows of Barra Strait of Bras d'Or Lake and once part of what was known as Grand Narrows Settlement on Hwy. 233.
  • The area was settled in 1891 by immigrants from the Scottish Hebrides and known as Saundrie. When a name change from Grand Narrows was sought, the Hebridean Island of lona, ancient centre of Celtic religion, was chosen.
  • Iona translates from the Hebrew as 'dove.'

  • Highland Village Museum At Iona

    This is North America's only living-history museum of Gaelic folk life and the only place in North America where Gaelic is the community language.

    There are 11 historic buildings including the 2,000 sq. ft. Malagawatch Church which was floated here by barge across Bras d'Or Lake in 2003.

    Costumed guides show visitors rare farm animals and artifacts from the 1780-1920 period.

    There is a Hebridean Black House, store, carding mill, period homes, forge and other attractions. Gift shop.

  • Joseph 'Joe' MacLean

    Fiddler collected rare books about fiddlers Joseph 'Joe' MacLean (1916-96) was a fiddler, composer and collector of Scottish music who performed throughout eastern Canada and New England.

    He was born in Washabuck of descendants who had emigrated to Nova Scotia in the early 1800s from Scotland's Isle of Barra.

    His rare books about Scottish fiddlers and more than 18,000 tunes may be seen at the Highland Village Museum, 1 km SW of Iona.
