16 RAILWAY ST |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Cape Breton Island
Description From Owner:
- The place was known as Juste au Corps and later Broad Cove until 1903. In 1791 a large number of Scottish Roman Catholic settlers came here from the Hebrides.
- Some coal was mined starting in 1867, but in the 1880s William Penn Hussey opened a coal mine at nearby Big River and Broad Cove became important as a coal mining centre.
- Hussey started Broad Cove Coal Co. and wharves and a railway were built to ship the coal 3 km from McIsaac's Pond. The mines failed to prosper after 1925. They were subsidized by the government until 1953.
