First known as Kakagwek for the place of dried meat.' Kag-agwek found elsewhere can mean ‘place of dried fish.
First called Halfway River for its location midway between Grand Pré and Pisquid (now Windsor). Edward Barker was the first settler in 1789.
In 1849 Senator Ezra Churchill suggested the name be changed “because the place has become the chief port of Hants County.” The Churchill shipyard for a time was the world's fifth largest
