  • First known as Kakagwek for the place of dried meat.' Kag-agwek found elsewhere can mean ‘place of dried fish.
  • First called Halfway River for its location midway between Grand Pré and Pisquid (now Windsor). Edward Barker was the first settler in 1789.
  • In 1849 Senator Ezra Churchill suggested the name be changed “because the place has become the chief port of Hants County.” The Churchill shipyard for a time was the world's fifth largest
