626 BRAS D'OR FLORENCE RD |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Cape Breton Island
Description From Owner:
- The site was part of a grant made to James Gay in 1794 and he settled here soon after. The place was called Cox's in the 1800s for a family of that name that lived here.
- In 1905 the place was named for Florence, wife of Cape Breton North-Victoria MP Hon. D. D. Mackenzie (1859-1927). MacKenzie later served as federal Liberal House leader following the death of Sir Wilfred Laurier in 1917.
- Sydney Number Three of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Co. was sunk in 1903 and by 1959 employed most of the adult males in Florence. The mine was closed in 1961.
