  • Scottish settlers named the place when they arrived around 1820. They found a community of English people started in 1780, who could not speak Gaelic.
  • The new arrivals called the place Bhal na Ghul, 'the town of the English. This was the home of giant Angus MacAskill.

    World's tallest 'normal' giant The world's tallest genetically normal giant was born in the Hebrides of Scotland but moved to St. Anns when he was a child.

    Angus McAskill (1825-1863) was of normal size at birth but by the time he was in his 20s, he was 2.36 metres (7.55 feet) tall and weighed more than 190 kg (418 pounds).

    His hands measured 20 x 30 cm (8 x 12 in.). He toured the western hemisphere with a sideshow for a few years demonstrating astonishing feats of strength, but returned to Cape Breton in 1853 and ran a business.

    Edward Beaupré of Willow Bunch, SK, was taller than McAskill, at 8 feet, but had a malfunctioning pituitary gland.
