Description From Owner:
- The site was first granted to Rev.John Bryenton in 1765 and was known as the Montague Grant. In 1864 Baron Franz von Ellershausen acquired a grant of 60,000 acres including Panuke and Stillwater Lakes.
- He was a mining engineer drawn here by the discovery of gold. The following year he built a mansion and steam mill at Stillwater and 32 small houses for German immigrants.
- There were four stores, three hotels and two steam mills. The post office opened in 1866 as Ellershausen and over time, the name changed to Ellershouse.
