Description From Owner:
- Cumberland County and Basin were named after Fort Cumberland which Fort Beauséjour was renamed following its capture by the British in 1755.
- That fort recalls the career of the infamous Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), nicknamed 'Butcher Cumberland’ who crushed Jacobite forces under Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the Battle of Culloden in 1764.
- The duke was also referred to as 'Stinking Willie,' a nickname still applied to a noxious weed found in both Scotland and Nova Scotia.
