1867 STONEY ISLAND RD |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : South Shore
Description From Owner:
- Centreville: Settled around 1768 and named for its location between other island communities. The post office, called McGray, opened in 1874.
- Archelaus Smith Historical Society: When the British invited resettlement of Acadia in 1761, Archelaus Smith from New England was one of the first to answer the call.
- He was the first settler on Cape Sable Island where many of his descendants remain to this day. Smith had a good education and was chosen as clerk of the proprietors and also served as magistrate and surveyor.
- The Archelaus Smith Historical Society has honoured him by naming their museum for him. The museum tells of shipwrecks, artists, sea captains, fishing techniques and gear and the famous Cape Island boat.
