Description From Owner:
  • The area was settled around 1760 by English from CT who took the places vacated by expelled Acadians.
  • The community had a number of name changes before Berwick was chosen in 1851 and approved by the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographic Names (CPCGN).
  • First called Pleasant Valley, then Currie's Corner and then Congdon's Corner. In 1835 the name changed to Davison's Corners. The name is sometimes attributed to Berwick, Scotland, but this place was named after Berwick, ME.
  • A letter to the CPCGN reads in part: 'One of our residents travelling in the United States passed through (Berwick, ME) and pleased with its neat and tidy appearance (he) suggested the name.' The town was incorporated in 1923.

Your Review:

  • The ice cream soda was invented in Berwick by James William Black in 1886.

In Canada, James William Black of Berwick, Nova Scotia was granted a U.S. patent on December 8, 1885, and a Canadian patent on July 5, 1886, for "ice-cream soda".

He created and bottled a syrup made from whipped egg whites, sugar, water, lime juice, lemons, tartaric or citric acid, flavouring extract and bicarbonate of soda.

Ice water stirred into a small ladle of the mixture in a glass produced a delicious, foam-topped drink.

  • Much-awarded indie rock/folk rock singer Berwick-born Joel Plaskett (1975-) needs a lot of shelves and walls on which to display the immense number of awards his singing has earned.

He began playing the guitar at age 13 and at 14 formed his first band, Nabisco Fonzie. He is considered one of the best Canadian songwriters of his generation.

To date he has won at least 15 East Coast Music Awards, a Juno and many Music Nova Scotia Awards, plus dozens more from CBC Radio, The Coast and Great American Song Contest.

His music is described as "straight forward, approachable arrangements with sparse instrumentation drawing on a variety of genres simultaneously, including folk, country, classic rock and pop."
