236 Commercial Street, P.O. Box 130 |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley
Description From Owner:
- The area was settled around 1760 by English from CT who took the places vacated by expelled Acadians.
- The community had a number of name changes before Berwick was chosen in 1851 and approved by the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographic Names (CPCGN).
- First called Pleasant Valley, then Currie's Corner and then Congdon's Corner. In 1835 the name changed to Davison's Corners. The name is sometimes attributed to Berwick, Scotland, but this place was named after Berwick, ME.
- A letter to the CPCGN reads in part: 'One of our residents travelling in the United States passed through (Berwick, ME) and pleased with its neat and tidy appearance (he) suggested the name.' The town was incorporated in 1923.
