Description From Owner:
- The Aboriginal name for the place was Ministegek, 'he has gone for it,' and the French called the place Le Passage because of the Channel between Cape Sable Island and the mainland.
- In 1699 the name was Passage de Bacareau and one French family lived here; by 1748 eight French families lived here.
- In 1881 a steamer named Arcadia was built to operate as a ferry between here and Yarmouth. In 1888 a larger steamer, LaTour, was launched. In 1949 a causeway was completed between Cape Sable Island and the mainland.
- Northeast Point: Settlement began here before 1760. By 1847 a ferry between here and Knowles Point on the mainland was established. By 1884 The Barrington and Cape Island Steam Ferry Co. was operating the vessel Yuba between these points.
- The Cape Island Causeway was opened in 1949.
