Description From Owner:
  • Baddeck is the shiretown of Victoria County. The name may derive from the Mi'kmaw words Bedek, Ebedek or Abadak, changed by early French settlers to Bedeque.
  • The meaning is believed to be ‘place with an island near,' which fits Baddeck since it faces Kitson Island.
  • Historian William Ganong believes the name source may be traced to the Mi'kmaw root 'petek', which means a turn or bend backwards.
  • He says the name has 'a broad descriptive sense and alludes to the fact that a reverse turn must be made in order to enter the harbour.' On a 1751 French map the place is shown as La Badecque.
  • Until 1851 it was called Little Baddeck. Half-pay naval officer James Duffus from Halifax was the first English settler in 1819 although a land grant had been made in 1790 to Capt. Jonathan Jones. James Anderson began shipbuilding here in 1841.
