Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Yarmouth and Acadian Shores
Description From Owner:
- Champlain named the point in 1604 because, he said, it was formed like a fork.
- In 1672, Nicolas Denys (1598-1688) described the place: “Vessels can there be placed under shelter. The fishery for cod is abundant and not far offshore; [the cod] comes here earlier than any other place in Acadia.
- The name became anglicized in the late 19th century. The first lighthouse was built here in 1839.
- Cape Forchu Lightstation is reached after passing the Fishermen's Monument, fishing village and sandy beaches, about 11 km (7 mi) from Yarmouth. There is an interpretive and information centre in the heritage lighthouse
- as well as a gift shop, walking trails and wireless internet.
