Description From Owner:
  • First called Umtaban for ‘an over-flowing flood,' referring to the tidal marsh which was reclaimed by the Acadians and English with the use of dykes. The French name for the area was Grand Pré, 'great meadow.'
  • The name Horton was likely given for Horton Hall in Northhamptonshire, England, residence of George Montagu Dunk (1716-71), 2Earl of Halifax, then president of the Board of Trade and in 1761 Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
  • Acadians began moving here in the 1680s.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015
