- The Mi'kmaw name was Twailkete, 'the little opening' or outlet.
- For a time the place was known as The Straits of Sheila after an aristocratic Irish lady who lived on MacNevin's Island just N of the strait. The first settlers arrived between 1812 and 1820.
- Matheson: One of the first settlers was John Matheson in 1855.
