- Nyanza was the settlement's name when the post office opened in 1883. It was adopted, likely because the name is not repeated anywhere in Canada.
- The name source was Lake Nyanza or Nyasa, now in Malawi but then part of what became the Nyasaland Protectorate. The name drives from the Bantu word for 'any water area of great size.'
