Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Yarmouth and Acadian Shores
Description From Owner:
- For a time this island was derisively called Non Present, Non Prison or NonParison Island. During the 1755 deportation of Acadians, Major Jedidiah Prebble put a number of Acadians ashore here for safekeeping until he could return to take them to Boston.
- The “captives” escaped over the tidal flats and were “not present” when Prebble returned for them. The current name is from New England settlers who came here in the 1970s.
- At one time there were two shipyards on the island. Early in the 1900s a causeway was built, linking the island to the mainland.
- The island is the point of origination of Pasta primavera. In 1975, New York chef Sirio Maccioni flew to the Canadian summer home of Italian Baron Carlo Amato, called Shangri-La Ranch located on the island.
- Maccioni and his two top chefs began experimenting with game and fish, but eventually the baron and his guests wanted something different.
- Maccioni then mixed butter, cream and cheese, with vegetables and pasta together and brought the recipe back to New York City.
