    • Revered Activist Murdered By Grandson

    Mi'kmaq elder Nora Bernard, who fought for and won a $5 billion settlen for wrongs against Aboriginal people, was murdered in 2007 by her 25-y old grandson, James Douglas Gloade.

    The frail 72-year-old had refused to Gloade more cash to buy drugs.

    Fuelled by three types of drugs Gloade repeatedly smashed his grandmother in the face and then slashed her throat with a kitchen knife at her home on the Millbrook First Nation near Truro.

    Berr fought for 15 years to win the $5 billion judgement for the abused survivors of Indian residential schools.

    Gloade, who had 37 previous convictions, was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter in 2009.

    Crown prosecutor Nigel A agreed to a reduced charge from murder to manslaughter because Glod drug-induced state prevented him from forming the intent to commit murder.
