English settlement began around 1761. The name results from the ministry of Rev. Dr. William McCulloch (1811-95) who served Truro's First Presbyterian (now First United) Church from 1839-85.
His father, Dr. Thomas McCulloch (1776-1843) was one of the founders of the Nova Scotia Bible Society and passed on an interest in the distribution of the Scripture to his son.
So it was the custom of McCulloch to give copies of the Holy Scripture to any who might want them. Since he did this for almost a half century, the nickname for his neighbourhood became established.
In 1885 the Nova Scotia Agricultural College began in Truro and an experimental farm opened here in 1888. The college was formally established by the provincial legislature in 1899.
