Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Eastern Shore
Description From Owner:
- The first land grant here was in 1865 to James Hilchie and the place was named for an abundance of moose.
- In 1897 the name changed to Arlington but the original name continued in use. Lieut. C. L'Estrange found gold on the Tangier River in 1858 but nothing was done until 1860, when John Pulsiver of Musquodoboit, led by an Aboriginal guide, found the same
- place. He reported his discovery in Halifax, which led to an influx of prospectors and the area being declared a gold district in 1861.
- By 1862 Francis Ellershauser had built a stamp mill and the following year W. H. Newman opened a better mill. By 1904 there were two hotels and two gold mines supporting a population of 100.
