- This settlement is located on the St. Mary's River about five miles downstream from the forks of the river in eastern Nova Scotia. It was formerly part of Stillwater.
- The name is said to be that of the Scottish home town of the first Postmaster McKenzie, 'Nish' is the Gaelic for here or place hence 'water place.'
- It may have been named after Waternish on the Isle of Skye. Settlement probably was begun in the early 19th century.
- In the 1870's the residents were people named Whidden, Mcintosh, McLean, Wier, Fraser, Taylor and McKenzie. Farming is the basic industry.
