- The Indian name may have been Petawagumegek, 'running through barrens.'
- Stillwater is a descriptive name given to this part of the river before 1831 because it was less turbid than other parts of the river.
- The area was settled about 1810 by the McLean family from West River, Pictou County.
- William McLane [McLean] was schoolmaster here in 1846. A new school was erected in 1866. Farming is the basic industry. Population in 1956 was 52.
