- This rural area is located on the east branch of St. Mary's River. It was probably so named because of an abundance of that type of tree in the area.
- Richard Bradford of Country Harbour received a four hundred acre grant in this area in 1815. Much of the village site was part of a 1765 grant made to Rev. James Lyons and others.
- Matthew McLaughlan was schoolmaster at 'East Branch of St. Mary's River' in 1834. A new school-house was completed in 1903.
- A Federal Post Office was completed June 18, 1964. Lumbering and limited farming are the basic industries. Population in 1956 was 138. Formerly called East Branch St Marys River
