Description From Owner:
  • In 1818, 112 Welsh settlers from Carmarthen and Cardiganshire arrived in Halifax. Sir James Kempt wanted them to settle in Shelburne but they preferred to settle further up the Roseway River.
  • They called their settlement New Cambria, but their neighbours called it Welshtown and that name survived.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015

  • Margaret Atwood

  • Margaret Atwood's Nova Scotia Roots

Poet and novelist Margaret Atwood (1939-) is a descendant of David Davis, a native of Carmarthenshire, Wales, and one of the earlier settlers in Welshtown, Nova Scotia.

Ms. Atwood has acknowledged her roots by saying: "Every time I write a poem, I wonder which of my ancestors had the poetic gene and passed it along to me. I suspect it was one of the Welshtown settlers."
