Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Eastern Shore
Description From Owner:
- Port Dufferin: The place was known as Salmon Harbour until an act of the legislature in 1899 changed the name to Port Dufferin.
- There were nine families living here in 1827. The name change honoured Frederick Blackwood, 1st Marquis of Dufferin and Ava (1826-1902), Governor General of Canada from 1872-78.
- West Newdy Quoddy: Newdy Quoddy is believed to be a corruption of the Mi'kmaw Noodaakwade, for 'seal-hunting place.
- When Peter Besanson from Lunenburg County moved here in 1823, he found seven families who had been living here since 1818. Earlier name versions were Noody Quoddy, Noody Quady, Newton-quoddy and Newdiquoddy.
- Quoddy Harbour: The name is a corruption of the Mi'kmaw Noodaakwade, ‘the seal hunting place.' Variations over time have included Noody Quaday, Noody Quodoy and Quoddy. Settlement began in the area around 1820.
