- They named their new home for the one they had left. Gair Loch is Gaelic for 'short lake’. There is also a Gairloch Lake in Pictou County.
- New Gairloch: Findlay McDonald from Scotland settled here soon after 1801. Land was granted here starting in 1855. The place was named after Gairloch in Inverness-shire, Scotland.
