1741 HWY 242 |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley
Description From Owner:
- The French called the area le champs élysées and the area is still known locally as the 'Elysian Fields. The name derives from the Mi'kmaw name Munoodek, ‘a small bay.'
- There was a small French settlement here in the early 1700s which was abandoned in 1751.
- Following the expulsion of the Acadians this area became part of the vast land holdings of J. F. W. Des Barres and in 1834 it was purchased by Amos 'King' Seaman (1788-1864) of Boston.
- He amassed a fortune operating a quarry that produced grindstones and flywheels for markets in the US and West Indies.
- He was nicknamed 'The Grindstone King,' developed a model village for his employees and a shipping network that spanned the world.
