Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Cape Breton Island
Description From Owner:
- Cape Morien: First named Mooloktooch or Noolektooch, ‘place jammed with ice.' The cape was named Morien first and the name is thought to be a corruption of the Portuguese for St. Martin.
- Early French maps show it as Le Cap Mordienne and Bay de Mordienne. Briefly after the Seven Years War it was called Cow Bay.
- When Samuel Holland made his survey in 1767-68 he gave the name Granby Bay but the place continued to be called Cow Bay until the name was changed to Port Morien by provincial statute.
- Site of the first regular coal mining operations in North America, established by the French in 1720 to supply Louisbourg. In 1776 the only working coal mine in Cape Breton was the Block House Mine on the N side of Morien Bay.
