Barrachois or Barachois is a common place name in Atlantic Canada... more than 30 times in Nova Scotia alone. The word is of Basque origin from 'barratxo' or 'barrachoa' for sandbar.
The French changed it to 'barachoix' or 'barachois' and extended the meaning to a shallow body of water sheltered from the sea by a sand spit or strip of land. Donald and Andrew Laing were living here by 1840 when they received land grants.
