First called Highfield, but changed by Act of Parliament in 1873. The name means 'beautiful mountain' and has been given to at least 25 places in the US Since the original Irish settlers came from NH, it is possible they named the place after Belmont, NH
Earlier names were Nesakunechkik, Isgonish and Chiganois.
