7760 HWY 14 |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley
Description From Owner:
- The Avon River forms part of the boundary between Hants and Kings Counties and was known by the French as Rivière Pisiquid from the Mi'kmaw word 'Pesegitk.'
- The place was first known as Newport Landing and Town Landing because this is where immigrants from RI landed in 1760. The post office remained as Newport until it was closed in 1963 and replaced by a rural route.
- Avon is a popular name for rivers in the UK. This river was named in 1794 at the time of the creation of Windsor Township and likely was named after the Avon River in England.
- Avondale and Avonport were named because of their proximity to the Avon River.
