First to invent paper made from wood Charles Fenerty of Springfield Lake was the first person to invent paper from wood pulp, but his claim wasn't recognized until a few years after German weaver Friedrich Gottlob Keller was hailed as the inventor of groundwood papermaking in the early 1840s.

When he was about 18, Fenerty found out that paper makers faced a shortage of rags from which paper then was made and set about finding an alternative.

At one of his family's three sawmills he noticed the friction of wood on wood produced a fuzzy material which he realized could make paper if it was flattened and shaped.

He showed his prototype in 1838 or '39. No commercial advantage was taken of his discovery.
