Description From Owner:
- The Aboriginal people called the place Pogwek or Pokwek, 'the smoky or 'dry lake.
- The first settlers in 1834 were 30 Black people. About 1817, a number of veterans from the Napoleonic Wars settled about 1.5 km W of here and built a mill to manufacture barrels.
- They named the place for the Duke of Wellington under whom many had served, but shortly after 1824 the place was abandoned.
