12336 HWY 224 |
Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Bay of Fundy & Annapolis Valley
Description From Owner:
- First called St. Andrews, supposedly because an early explorer camped here on St. Andrews Day. About 1885 the name Wittenburg was suggested by Rev. E. T. Miller because the church resembled that on which Martin Luther had nailed his thesis.
- During the First World War the German name seemed to denote a lack of patriotism and a request to change the name to Mapleville was sent to Ottawa.
- That request was refused, but the name of the district of Wittenburg was changed to Mapleville by provincial statute in 1917.
- Ephraim Wright was one of the first settlers here in 1805.
- With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015
