Description From Owner:
  • First called Goolwagopskooch, ‘haunt of the hooded seals’. It was settled in the 1760s by members of the New England Planter migration.
  • The first English name for the place was Gates Breakwater but, in line with the proBritish sympathies of the family, the name was changed to Port George to honour King George III (1738–1820).
  • The first vessel built in the shipyard here ended its days as a privateer and was captured by the Americans in the War of 1812.
  • With permission from 'Nova Scotia Place Names' David E. Scott 2015
