- North East Margaree: James Ross was the first settler here, in 1793. His wife, the former Harriet Lejeune, was the first white woman in the district and became known as Granny Ross.
- She administered serum to sufferers of smallpox who were said to live to age 120.

- North East Egypt: This place derived its name from the Biblical story of Joseph's sojourn in Egypt, only in this case it was Joseph Dobson from Yorkshire, England, who came here and bought a farm in 1780 from Patrick Coady.
- The first of a number of mills in the valley was a gristmill built by Capt. John Philips.
- James Ross spent the winter of 1801-02 with the area's Aboriginal people and the next year was joined by his three brothers. Together the brothers occupied 2,200 acres between Big Brook and Methodist Hill.
- Rossville: Early names were Ross Settlement and North-East Margaree. The first settlement in the district is believed to have been here.
- South West Egypt: Farquhar McLellan of Morar, Scotland, moved here from New Brunswick in 1838, bringing with him his cousin Alexander McLellan.
