- In 1719 Gov. St. Ovide referred to the new settlement as Saint Esprit. A French order Saint Esprit was founded by Henry III in the 16th century.
- Esprit is French from the Latin 'spiritus,' meaning spirit. The Aboriginal people called the place Asukadich, 'the place of clams.' There were 26 people living here in 1716 and by 1737, the population was 546.
