Nova Scotia Tourism Region : Cape Breton Island
Description From Owner:
- The name translates from the French as 'the hand of God,' but ironically that name derived from the First Nations peoples' words Mendoo or Mundoo for the Devil or 'the spirit of evil.'
- Another version is that the name came from a storm tossed sailor who claimed to have seen the hand of God outstretched to save him. Fishermen had settled here by the mid-1700s, but they left after the capture of Louisbourg.
- English immigrants began arriving in the very early 1800s.
- In 1920 the 258-foot schooner rigged steamer Cape Breton was bound for Louisbourg from Halifax when she grounded in a gale at Main-a-Dieu Passage off the SE point of Scatarie Island. The entire crew of about 30 perished.
